The German historical school, also known as Historicism and Prussian School, began with Leopold Ranke(1795-1886). Because of its emphasis on the Principle of temporal uniqueness, the idea of the state and its use of intuitive understainding as its main method, German historians in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century have focused on political and diplomatic history. In the field of World History, because of the limitation on method and perspective, their interest was focused mainly on the diplomatic relations between European countries. The scope of their ethnology, sociology and national economics provided greater stimulus toward the study of world history.
