On the basis of the need for sustainable development research planning of the National Science Council, this project will focus on the areas of humanity and social sciences in the mid-term planning for sustainable development research. Considering the past research experiences, impediments to sustainable development encountered in contemporary Taiwan, domestic research landscape and capacities in the humanity and social sciences areas, and emerging research trends in various international research groups and organisations, this project preliminarily sets out the following five research theme: industry, land use, population, natural resources, and governance. Expert group meetings will be held to discuss these main research themes and propose detailed research topics before the project finalises the mid-term planning report for the areas of humanity and social sciences in sustainable development research. It is contemplated that, through the guidance of such mid-term planning, Taiwan』s research capacity in the areas of humanity and social sciences can be more internationalised and publicised through international publications. Furthermore, the research results can be useful as the basis for policy making as well as the tool for policy assessment. In addition, this project will cooperate with the other two areas of SD research under the framework of National Science Council』s Sustainable Development Division: environmental protection research group and global environmental change research group. Integration and future cooperation amongst these three research groups will be discussed and proposed through group meetings. Proposal for an integrated mid-term SD research planning will be put forward as a final research result.
