Competitive dynamics is one of significant research streams in strategic management filed. It can be traced back to Schumpeter, the economist and strategist, who points out that firms can attain competitive advantages via entrepreneur’s exploration for innovation and competitive actions. Departing from the Austrian School, competitive dynamics include two core concepts: action and market process, which implies the purposeful actions of organizational behaviors. Schumpeter (1934) suggests that since the market is a dynamic process, firms need to continuously respond to the market via entrepreneurship and innovation to sustain competitive advantage. Competitive dynamics scholars (i.e. Miller and Chen, 1996) further define the strategy as a repertoire of competitive actions, such as pricing and new product launch. How firms adopt competition actions and respond to competitors’ actions in a dynamic environment becomes increasingly important in the strategic management research. Based on the research of competitive action/reaction, the recent competitive dynamics studies have been extended to the various streams, including first mover advantage, co-opetition, multipoint competition, strategic groups, and regional clusters (Ketchen, Snow & Hoover, 2004). Firms can attain superior economic rents if they can understand the above competitive dynamics and sustain competitive advantage. Therefore, this research project will use different dimensions to investigate how competitive dynamics affect a firm’s competitive advantage. First, in a fast changing and competitive environment, we would like to explore how strategic uncertainty affects a firm’s competitive dynamic strategy. Second, in a highly globalized and innovative environment, firms compete with each other from final product markets to factors markets. This research also explores how firms in new developing countries use international competitive dynamics strategy in a factor market to compete their multinational rivals. Finally, in this complex and changing world, the inter-organizational relationships become more complicate. Co-opetition becomes increasing important in inter-organizational relationships. Thus, we also would like to investigate how strategic alliances affect multipoint competition among firms. By studying the above research agenda, this research hopes to explore a thorough and novel understanding regarding the latest competitive dynamics research.
