Watershed management is an important element of the environmental policy in Taiwan. Many conflicts happened between watershed conservation practices and the indigenous communities in the mountain area however reflect the fact that there is too little chance for indigenous people to express their environmental discourse from their own perspectives. Through the ethnographical study in the Atayal indigenous communities in the watershed of Shih-Men Reservoir, this project aims to reveal the philosophy of lmuhuw and the concept of qutux llyung that forms the basis of human-environment relations in Atayal culture. Adopting the action-oriented approach, this project also intends to facilitate the conversation between settlement and settlement, generation and generation in the communities, so that the adaptation, reinvention and application of indigenous ecological knowledge in contemporary circumstance may be made possible and the cooperation between indigenous and modern knowledge in the watershed management can be achieved.
