In an era of knowledge economy, the innovative technology and knowledge acquired through the creation, transfer and application of information is a crucial constituent that helps to upgrade the industrial competitiveness. Geographic proximity and network connection are considered the two main methods to stimulate innovation of industrial knowledge. The former can reduce the cost of knowledge innovation by shortening the transactional and communication distance, and the latter can accelerate knowledge innovation by creating an atmosphere where participants are close, complementary and able to construct an information flow. In this study, we discover whether the relative influences of geographic proximity and network connection will change knowledge transmission models is one of the main focuses. With the characteristics of knowledge-intensive and the demand of industry-academia interaction, innovation and R&D activities, biotechnology industry becomes an ideal research object for this study. Biotechnology industry is not only the world`s great investment in the emerging high-tech industries, but also positioned as the country`s competitiveness new indicators. Based on the concept of geographic proximity and network connection, this study use the SEM approach to identify the knowledge transmission path model of key actors in biotech industry. This study also examines the influence level, causal relation and complementary/alternative relations of geographic proximity, network connection and the interaction of the two factors. Therefore, the plan is to conduct a two-year research on the above topic. The work during the first year of the research would be focused on the theory of the innovation system and knowledge transmitting studies. Creation, transmission and applications of other correlated relevant theories would be discussed, and then with additional theories from other studies on network and geographical proximity, the evidence model of knowledge transmitting is constructed. Also, mapping out the chart of how knowledge is transmitted through businesses by conducting a survey. The plan for the second year would be based on the findings of the research from the first year, analyzing the role of research and development network of the businesses have in the knowledge transmitting chart; understanding whether or not the variance in transmitting charts are the results of different R&D networks. At last, a comprehensive analysis will be made on the influence of geographical proximity and R&D network might have on the knowledge transmitting process, and then provide suggestions due to the results of this study
