Clinically it has been reported that some aphasic patients display compression of intonation while some other patients exhibit exaggeration of intonation. The present study aims to clarify this controversy over fundamental frequency range (F0) by providing cross-linguistic data from Chinese fluent and nonfluent aphasics. Our research question is whether the excursion of F0 is significantly influenced by different subject populations sentence lengths or tones. The statistical analyses yield significant main effects for sentence length and tone but non-significant effect for subject category. The sentence main effect indicates that along with the increase in sentence length the range in F0 also enlarges. Post hoc comparisons reveal significant differences between high-falling tone and the other three tones which evidence the interplay of tone and intonation. On the other hand the non-significant effect indicates that Chinese aphasic patients both fluent and non-fluent are not impaired in planning the F0 excursion. Earlier studies on French and Norwegian aphasics detect more restricted F0 range for non-fluent patients. In the present work non-fluent patients do display compression of F0 range though the difference between them and normal controls regarding this feature fails to reach significance.
