Companies that seek to build industry-sponsored e-commerce systems (ISEC) face a challenge to estimate the investment value while the system is across enterprise boundaries and the attitude of trading partners toward the participation is full of uncertainty. This research aims to apply option valuation approach to clarify the uncertainties of ISEC investment strategies by analyzing the expected revenue, cost, project risks, and time to the market, which companies can take as a guideline while designing the ISEC systems. Although the potential of option pricing models on evaluating IT value is discussed in prior literature, the models are never applied in e-commerce field, which the success of the investment depends on the participation of multiple parties. If the model succeeds, it can be used to examine the effect of counteractions between suppliers and buyers with the potential to assist managers designing a 「win-win」 B2B e-commerce investment strategy.
