The purpose of this monograph is two-fold: the first is to compare and contrast the development of journalism and communication education in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the second is to examine the impacts of journalism education on journalists in terms of salary, career path, job satisfaction, news practices, news values and professional ethics. The basic methods used include historical analysis and questionnaire surveys. Although journalism education in the three Chinese societies started at different: historical junctures; they shared a common conception based in the West. The diverging political environments have given rise to the formation of two major types of journalism education: the socialist model in mainland China and the liberal model in Taiwan arid Hong Kong. Analysis of representative samples of journalists has found that the impacts of journalism and communication education vary across the three Chinese societies. The implications of the findings for the future of journalism and communication education are also discussed.
