Abstract: This paper presents the generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS)-based transport architecture for next-generation wireless IP networks as well as the handoff procedure in such networks. A QoS-aware crossover LSR (label switching router) discovery (CLD) algorithm, to reroute a user connection during handoff in such networks, is proposed. In the proposed GMPLS-based wireless IP networks, when inter-cluster handoff occurs, it causes connection rerouting in the wired backbone network, and the connection rerouting operations are performed at the crossover LSR. The proposed CLD algorithm performs LSP rerouting with the target of maintaining QoS requirements for different traffic types. Comparing the proposed algorithm with three existing crossover switch discovery algorithms, it is our conclusion that the proposed CLD algorithm achieves better performance in terms of QoS maintenance and network resource utilization efficiency.
