This study examines how Taiwanese residents in Japan use the social platform Threads to construct imaginaries of Japanese culture and migration life. Since its launch in 2023, Threads has become an important platform for young Taiwanese users to discuss topics related to relocating to Japan for study or work. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of affordances and parasocial interaction, this study employed a qualitative method, using semi-structured interviews. The research data were collected from 15 interviewees through purposive sampling, analyzing Taiwanese users’ interactions and narratives concerning Japan on Threads. The findings indicate that Taiwanese residents in Japan share personal experiences through posts, transforming individual knowledge into accessible resources for the public via Q&A discussions. In contrast, Taiwanese without relocation experiences construct imaginaries through media and social platforms, revising their perceptions in dialogue with those already residing in Japan. Compared with news, experts, and official authorities, user-generated narratives are perceived as more authentic and practical, making them critical references for migration-related decisions. Moreover, platform algorithms subtly reinforce stereotypes of Japan among Taiwanese audiences. This study explains how cultural imagination, user-generated narratives, and algorithmic influence intersect in shaping migration discourses on social media, providing insights for future research on how digital platforms shape cross-cultural imaginaries and migration storytelling.
