This article examines the period and channels through which Joseon literati encountered Beijing local gazetteers, analyzes the citations of these gazetteers in Yeonhaengrok, and subsequently traces the internal transmission of Yeonhaengrok literature using Beijing gazetteers as a clue. In the late 18th century, Joseon envoys first encountered Beijing local gazetteers in Beijing bookstores. These gazetteers, such as Dijing jingwu lüe, Chunming mengyulu, and Rixia jiuwen Kao, meticulously documented Beijing's history, palaces, and strategic locations. They immediately became crucial references for the envoys to understand China and to compose their Yeonhaengrok. By the 19th century, Beijing local gazetteers had even become part of the private collections of some Joseon literati, occasionally being lent to envoys traveling to Beijing. In the creation of Yeonhaengrok, Beijing gazetteers were frequently used to supplement or verify information concerning Beijing's geography, history, and prominent figures. Furthermore, Yeonhaengrok that cited Beijing gazetteers were read by later generations and subsequently re-cited in later Yeonhaengrok, thereby becoming a significant element in the generational transmission of Yeonhaengrok literature. Examining how Joseon envoys cited these documents when writing their travelogues will provide crucial insights into how Joseon literati received and utilized Chinese literature, and also offer a glimpse into the circulation and dissemination of knowledge in East Asia.
