In the face of global concerns regarding climate change and sustainable development, enterprises face the challenge of balancing short-term economic returns with long-term sustainability objectives under limited resources. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a strategic framework for corporate strategies, whereas Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria have emerged as critical tools for firms to address internal and external pressures. Nevertheless, effectively integrating ESG and diversification strategies to meet both economic and sustainability goals remains a critical area of study.
This study focuses on Taiwanese enterprises and explores the impact of three diversification strategies—geographic, product, and customer diversification—on ESG involvement. Using empirical data from the Taiwan Economic Journal (TEJ) database, the study applies a panel data regression model with fixed effects to assess the significance of diversification strategies on ESG involvement.
The empirical findings reveal that geographic diversification exerts a significantly positive effect on ESG involvement, suggesting that expansion into international markets prompts firms to adopt more proactive sustainability measures due to encountering diverse regulations and social responsibilities. In contrast, product diversification positively relates to ESG involvement, implying that the complexity of resource allocation and external market demands may constrain sustainability efforts. Similarly, customer diversification has a negative and significant impact on ESG involvement, suggesting that while reducing dependence on a single customer base, firms face challenges in managing diversified demand and resource integration, which may weaken ESG involvement. These results underscore the need for precise resource allocation and management tailored to the unique attributes of each diversification strategy, in order to balance market expansion and sustainability objectives.
Overall, this research offers empirical insights for Taiwanese enterprises in strategic decision-making. It also advances theoretical discussions on diversification strategies and ESG involvement, providing practical guidance for differentiated strategies and indicating directions for future research.
