Based on empirical data, this study examines the relationship between mobile phone use and affect in the process of young talents migrating from small towns to Shanghai. The concept of affect, as proposed by the philosopher Spinoza, refers to the bodily and mental changes that arise from the body’s encounters. Migration here refers to the movement from small towns to metropolitan areas. Mobile phones, through their functions and the applications used, (1) shape users’ sense of space, human connection, belonging, and dislocation during migration; (2) are intertwined with their pursuit of personal achievement and a higher quality of life; and (3) influence users’ emotional and behavioral fluctuations when maintaining long-distance intimacy or family ties and when developing new intimate relationships. For empirical data, the researcher systematically analyzed interviews with 41 young talents who left their hometowns and settled in Shanghai. The findings reveal connections between mobile phone use and migrants’ sense of space, human connection, belonging, and dislocation; the link between mobile phone use and desire; and the link between mobile phone use, distant “home” connections, and new intimate relationships in Shanghai. These are respectively conceptualized as migratory affect, desire affect, and intimacy affect. Finally, by contrasting these three affective experiences with the concepts of affect, migration, and media environment, the study concludes: (1) In the migration process, mobile phone use influences users’ affect of dislocation more strongly than their affect of space, human connection, or belonging; (2) In terms of desire affect, on the one hand, the information and skills acquired via mobile phones can fulfill achievement desires, yet information overload can turn accomplishment into anxiety; on the other hand, depending on whether one can control the content and apps on the phone, the device may provide satisfaction by enabling control in everyday life, or, conversely, lead to a sense of disorder when it slips out of control; (3) In terms of intimacy affect, mobile phone use not only strengthens intimacy in long-distance relationships and reshapes users’ understanding of intimacy in Shanghai, but also enables them to expand professional networks for a sense of practicality, build new social circles for companionship, and alleviate helplessness when encountering workplace bottlenecks. Thus, the media environment constituted by mobile phones concretely affects individuals’affective experiences in three domains as described above. Through in-depth interviews with young migrants to Shanghai, this study adapts (or operationalizes) the concepts of affect, migration, and media environment to interpret the interview data, thereby offering a modest contribution to the relevant literature. |
