The global economy depends heavily on marine resources, and the blue economy has become a crucial vehicle for advancing sustainable development by balancing ocean resource use with economic growth and environmental protection. This analysis explored the significance of the blue economy in advancing sustainable development in Belize, a country that relies on its marine resources. Using a qualitative approach, the research analyzed key sectors of blue economy in Belize.
Data for this research were gathered through semi-structured interviews with primary actors, such as government officials, conservation organizations, fisherfolk, and marine-based business operators. Additionally, secondary data from policy documents, industry reports, and academic studies provided contextual insights into Belize’s blue economy strategies.
This study adds to the ongoing discussion about sustainable ocean-based economies by offering a localized perspective on how Belize is utilizing its marine ecosystem to support sustainable development. It highlights the importance of governance, community involvement, and international cooperation in building a resilient and inclusive blue economy. The study's insights can help inform policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers in creating more effective strategies to balance economic growth with marine conservation in small coastal and island nations. |
