The close link between false information and politics has become more apparent over time. In recent years, political figures have frequently accused each other of spreading false information in Taiwan. These developments raise the question of whether public anxiety over false information's perceived risks reduces political information use and participation, or encourages more active information seeking and political engagement. This study collected data from the Taiwan Communication Survey (TCS) and employed a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach to examine these relationships.
The results showed that false information perceived susceptibility increased anxiety, which in turn promotes online political participation over time. However, perceived susceptibility had no significant effect on political information use. Furthermore, fact-checking ability positively impacted both political information use and indirectly promoted political participation across different points in time. Compared to previous studies, this research not only employs longitudinal data to academically validate the connection between false information and political behavior in Taiwan but suggests new ways to think about promoting civic engagement as well. These insights serve as a valuable reference for media literacy education and public policy development.
