| 摘要: | 自十九世紀末,通訊技術廣泛應用在大眾傳播,資訊的交流變得非常便捷,但亦無可避免地使虛假訊息及捏造的消息以前所未有的速度廣泛流傳。此現象於二十世紀中期冷戰時代尤為顯著,引發作家與理論家對感知現實與客觀現實差距的關注。資訊的過量及其潛在的虛假性使他們意識到,感知現實已難完整呈現客觀、原始的現實。 安琪拉•卡特在《霍夫曼博士的地獄欲望機器》中,藉霍夫曼博士發動的「現實戰爭」,揭示現實乃由過量的人為塑造及仿真意象構成,感知的現實與本屬混沌、抽象的原始現實漸行漸遠。此觀察呼應當時的解構與後現代形上思潮,如布希亞提出擬像與媒體所創造的超真實構成異於原始現實的場域,而大眾則生活在這個無法辨別真實與假象的世界。 本論文旨在探討小說對現實的懷疑論,以及在冷戰時期大眾媒體作為資訊傳播與政治宣傳工具的背景下,感知現實如何被假象所支配的憂慮。第一章奠定小說與布希亞擬像概念之間互補的理論基礎,論證霍夫曼博士以符號與影像構建的幻象與超真實中的擬仿物本質相類。第二章援引布希亞對擬仿時間的詮釋,結合當代歷史編纂學理論,探討小說主角回憶敘事的不可靠性及反映原始現實的注定失敗。第三章則以波斯灣戰爭及奧威爾《一九八四》為例證,剖析資訊焦慮與現實的人為建構性,此二者乃冷戰時期文學與哲學作為冷戰時期文學與哲學共同察覺的現象及困境。 Since the late 19th century, communication technology has been widely applied in mass media, making the exchange of information highly efficient. However, it has also inevitably led to the unprecedented spread of fake information and fabricated news. This phenomenon became particularly pronounced during the Cold War in the mid-20th century, prompting writers and philosophers to examine the gap between perceived reality and objective reality. The overwhelming flow of information and its potential falsity made them realise that perceived reality could no longer fully or accurately represent objective, original reality. In her The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, Angela Carter, through the Reality War initiated by Doctor Hoffman, reveals that reality is constructed from an excess of simulations and representations. Consequently, perceived reality increasingly diverges from the chaotic, abstract realm of original reality. Carter’s observations resonate with contemporary deconstructionist and postmodern metaphysical thought, such as Baudrillard’s notion that simulacra and media-generated hyperreality constitute an entirely separate domain from original reality. The masses live within this mediated world where distinguishing between reality and illusion becomes impossible. This thesis seeks to explore scepticism toward reality as presented in the novel and examines concerns about how mass media, as a tool for information dissemination and political propaganda, dominated perception during the Cold War. The first chapter establishes the theoretical foundation linking the novel to Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra, arguing that Doctor Hoffman’s mirages, constructed via signs and images, share the essential nature of hyperreal simulacra. The second chapter builds upon Baudrillard’s interpretation of simulated history and temporality, integrating contemporary historiographical theories to analyse the unreliability and non-originality of the protagonist’s recollective narrative. The last chapter, using the Gulf War and Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four as supplementary case studies, dissect information anxiety and manipulative construction of reality, both of which were widely recognised as critical concerns in Cold War-era literature and philosophy. |
