The American Dream, a symbol of U.S. social culture, suggests that hard work and perseverance lead to material success and personal fulfillment. However, its pursuit reveals intersecting issues of class, race, gender, and generation. Asian Americans, often depicted as the “model minority,” are framed as ideal embodiments of this dream. Yet, such narratives obscure structural discrimination, marginalization, and psychological trauma, positioning them as “perpetual foreigners” and hindering their integration into mainstream society.

This study examines the Netflix series Beef as a case study to explore the intersectional dilemmas Asian immigrants face in pursuing the American Dream. From the 19th-century “Yellow Peril” to the model minority myth, Asian Americans occupy a liminal identity—neither fully Eastern nor Western. Through the protagonists’ escalating conflict, Beef exposes class anxieties, identity tensions, and generational trauma embedded in everyday life. It also investigates how emotional collapse and rage drive a reevaluation of the American Dream, presenting a counter-narrative of the “anti-American Dream” that challenges the myth of cruel optimism.

This study employs textual analysis, combining narrative theory, film semiotics, and intersectionality to examine the protagonists’ character arcs and their intertwined struggles with race, class, gender, and generational trauma under an “anti-American Dream” narrative. It further reflects on the lived realities and emotional experiences of Asian Americans in mainstream cultural contexts.
