In contemporary Taiwanese society, where gender equality awareness is on the rise, daily language still contains many expressions embedded with gender stereotypes—for example, the phrase “Oh, I’m a girl” (人家是女生). Often delivered in a playful or coquettish tone, this seemingly harmless utterance actually invokes expectations of women as weak and deserving of special care. Its communicative effects include seeking assistance, shifting responsibility, or diffusing tension, highlighting the critical role language plays in both reproducing and challenging gender norms.
This study adopts ethnomethodology as its theoretical foundation and designs a social interaction experiment, collecting 24 authentic dialogues in natural settings to analyze speakers’ motivations for using the phrase and the corresponding listener responses. The speaker motivations are categorized into four types: “explaining differences,” “seeking comfort,” “justifying delegation,” and “reminding to be kind.” Listener responses are further classified into three major types and six subtypes: acceptance (agreement, compliance), resistance (rebuttal, confusion), and avoidance (humor-driven deflection, disregard).
Findings suggest that the effectiveness of this phrase hinges on whether the listener accepts its underlying gendered assumption. When gender roles are still tacitly endorsed, the phrase tends to achieve its intended effect. However, in contexts where gender consciousness is heightened, it may be questioned, reinterpreted, or ignored. Through analysis of everyday linguistic interactions, this research reveals how gender norms are enacted, contested, and negotiated in conversation, offering empirical insight and critical perspective on the role of language in sustaining patriarchal structures. |
