Based on the observation of the tight bond between persons with psychiatric disability (consumer) and family caregivers, the investigator applied and received a research grant,Strengths based family intervention and recovery for persons with psychiatric disability and their families (NSC 101-2410-H-004 -077 -SS3). It implemented systematic strength-based intervention with both consumers and caregivers to facilitate their mutual recovery. Such a program was align with the trend of development in psychiatric treatment in the West, i.e. moving from individual-focused to family-focused, from pathological to strength perspective, from system theory to social constructionism, from expert to collaboration oriented, and emphasizing multicultural sensitivity. That research project adopted both quantitative and qualitative approach, by collecting data five times and conducting in-depth interviews with case managers, consumers, and caregivers. The data are very rich and the investigator has conducted statistical analyses as well as coding and conceptualization. This project aims to write a book by conducting a systematic review and synthesizing the concepts and methods of strengths based family intervention, and linking with the findings, so that the findings could be disseminated and the model could get promoted. It will take two years and there will be sixteen chapters in this book. Moreover, according to the past observations of the mutual recovery phenomenon between consumers and caregivers, this book will discuss how Chinese culture defines family relationship, family responsibility, and parent-child relationship, and how the context influences the application and results of strengths based family intervention. Such discussions will have unique implications for indigenization of family treatment in Taiwan.
