To cooperate with competitors, a seemingly irrational and difficult decision, is prevalent in practice across various industries and multinational companies. And the forms of competition and cooperation are also very diverse. When firms pursue both competition and cooperation, it is inherently prone to logical conflicts and contradictions. Dealing with the simultaneity of competition and cooperation involves the challenge of balancing competition and cooperation and maintaining the two at an appropriate intensity. How to handle these dilemmas through interactions between coopetition partners is considered an essential factor in executing coopetition and generating positive outcome in navigating coopetition. Researches on coopetition argue that coopetition is inherently risk-intensive and can tie up a large portion of a firm’s resources; hence focusing on a few meticulously selected competitors and managing them properly will lead to achieving positive outcomes. Based on the results of the coopetition analysis of four dyadic cases, this study found that the focal firm navigated the development of coopetition relationship and managed the tension caused by actions and responses through five organizational routines (IDEAS): Identifying the intensity of competitive and cooperative tensions, Designing coopetition mechanisms and deploying resources, Executing actions and aligning value creation, Attuning the tensions, intent, resources and actions, and Scoping the coopetition. This study further extends the perspectives formed by prior researches on coopetition capabilities and interprets management capabilities of navigating coopetition at the firm level. The proposed research findings and propositions of this study will be an important reference for firms that proactively participate in coopetition to take actions and make decisions.
