This project aims to investigate whether marriage confers subjective well-being and psychosocial health benefits among young adults and who benefits the most from marriage in Taiwan. Specifically, this project will examine how co-residence and partnership status jointly shape the subjective well-being and psychosocial health differences between married and unmarried young adults and how these differences vary across gender. Furthermore, this proposed project will also estimate the heterogeneous treatment effects of marital status on subjective well-being and psychosocial health, gauging who benefits the most from marriage. This proposed project will utilize the Taiwan Youth Project (TYP), a longitudinal data collected in the northern part of Taiwan. Panel data analysis and counterfactual framework are applied to address selection bias and to answer whether social causation or selection explains the benefits of marriage. The results of this project are expected to provide new insights regarding family dynamics and health disparities among young adults in Taiwan by answering whether marriage matters for young adults’ subjective well-being and psychosocial health.
