Isaiah Berlin and Hannah Arendt are widely regarded as two great twentieth-century political thinkers, who, both of Jewish background, made their debut into academia by trying to trace the origins of totalitarianism and each proposed a theory of pluralism. However, a serious comparison between their political thoughts is yet to be made. This research proposes to address this issue by taking the disputes between Berlin and Arendt over the trial of Adolf Eichman in Jerusalem as a clue to unraveling their different understanding of the event and the attendant seemingly irreconcilable judgments. And the goal is to arrive at a fuller grasp of totalitarianism by way of a reconstruction of their hidden dialogues. With this in place, it will go on to analyse the metaphysical foundations of their pluralism, and special efforts will be made to reconcile both thinkers’ methodological insights and visions of politics. The result will be a theory of reconciliation embedded in a politics of hope. First of all, Berlin, Arendt, and Rawls will be understood to be proposing different strategies to reconcile oneself with the society, that is, “recognizing the tragic nature of conflicts”, “forgiving and promising”, and “reflective equilibrium” respectively. Secondly, it will be argued that Rawls’ strategy cannot do the work needed by a divided society. And finally, the insights and strategies found in Berlin and Arendt will be combined into a theory of political hope that could really meets such demands. |
