Value Pluralism as Method: a Study of Isaiah Berlin's Political Thought
    Authors:
    Contributors: 政治系
    Date: 2017-06
    Issue Date: 2025-06-19
This research project aims to produce a monograph on Isaiah Berlin’s political thought. The approach it takes follows closely his recommended method for studying a political thinker and underlying this approach is an assumption that Berlin practices what his methodology professes. The re-interpretation thus is holistic in character, as opposed to the current mainstream piecemeal approach that tends to break his works down to unrelated themes - for instance, the distinction between negative and positive liberty or value pluralism understood as a meta-ethical thesis - for rigid logical analysis. Such a logical-analytical reductionist approach is inimical to Berlin’s thought and this monograph is meant to rectify the resulted misreading.
With a reading of Berlin in his own words in place, this monograph goes on to point out the problem with his value pluralism and then tries to solve it by a critical reconstruction of J. S. Mill’s reflections on his own life and thoughts as a doctrine of ‘experiments in living’ – which amounts to a version of political empiricism that has a great to contribute to today’s hotly debated issue concerning the methodology of political theorizing.
Berlin’s value pluralism thus will be understood as an approach to politics, a method for political analysis, as well as a research programme which can be applied to political issues of our day, such as environmental governance, transitional justice, and international justice. The third part of this monograph will demonstrate this claim by concrete examples.
