Irish had been under the Anglo-England’s rule since the medieval period. From the late 19th century till the early 20th century, the Irish writers W.B. Yeats, Synge, Lady Gregory and A.E and so on adopted from the Irish folk tales, folk songs, the Gaelic traditions as well as absorbed the customs of the Irish people and the local color to their works. Through popularizing the movement of Gaelic Revival, the consciousness of the Irish nation and the Irish culture was awakening, finally Irish won the independences from England in 1922. The movement of Gaelic Revival also spread to East Asia, the related colonial issues, such as the subjectivity of the nation and the national identity, expanded to the periphery of Japanese empire, the colonized Taiwan and Chosen. The main purpose of this project is to focus on two main figures, Yanohojin and Kikuchi Kan, who introduce the Irish literature to colonial Taiwan. Moreover, the other purpose of this project is to explore how the imagination of the Irish literature crossed over the boundary to encounter with Formosa to inspire Taiwan to imagine Taiwan ”herself” as well as to create their “own” Taiwanese literature.
