Different from Japan and South Korea, the economic development model experienced in Taiwan has been characterized by a large number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Many of those firms are inter-linked and have been capable of attaining high efficiency and productivity levels due to their flexibility and adaptation skills. At the same time, the structure of the banking sector was a key determinant to preserve macroeconomic stability in Taiwan and promote the creation of more SMEs. In this case, the role played by the state was crucial for the success of the developmental model, with an important visibility of state-owned companies, as contrasted to other states in East Asia. This paper goes through the particularities of the Taiwan experience and highlights some of the lessons that can be studied by scholars and policymakers in Mexico.
