This dissertation explores the public perception of average citizens in Sao Tome and Principe and Eswatini regarding Chinese and Taiwanese projects within their countries. Despite the growing presence of China in Africa, there remains a significant gap in the literature concerning the attitudes of ordinary citizens in this topic. This study addresses this gap by providing quantitative insights into public sentiment.
The research is grounded in a comprehensive literature review covering key topics such as China and Taiwan’s engagement in Africa and the significance of public perception in shaping international relations. By synthesizing existing works, this study contextualizes the public’s attitudes towards Chinese and Taiwanese initiatives within broader geopolitical dynamics.
To achieve this, a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies was adopted. Surveys and interviews conducted in both countries allowed a nuanced exploration of public opinion across diverse demographic groups. By incorporating multiple languages—Portuguese, English, and Chinese Mandarin—the research ensured inclusivity and accessibility, enabling respondents to express their views comfortably.
By filling the lacuna in empirical research on public perception of these countries in Sao Tome and Principe and Eswatini, this dissertation contributes to both academic scholarship and practical policymaking.
