    Abstract: 孟子的〈知言養氣章〉,文義晦澀,致使文理或義理的詮釋都是將此章一分為二的解讀,意即:上半章談養氣,下半章談孔子。尤其是義理的詮釋,多從「不動心」詮釋至「知言養氣」為止,使得義理結構的詮釋或有無法通貫全章之虞。因此,歷史研究者王棕琦試圖以歷史語境的還原,突出孟子的去齊之志,以求通貫全章之文理。但是,本文鑑於此章飽含孟子的心性工夫論,且與孔子的義理有著繼承和疊合的關係,所以不應偏廢義理而僅是文史的詮釋,故而採取「義理的文理」的詮釋,以求兼攝文史及義理,豐富孟子文本的內涵。準此,將以義理詮釋論者們所罕言的後半章作為本文的論述核心,意即:從「知言」至「聖人之於民,亦類也。出於其類,拔乎其萃」,以此補述此章後半段的義理,不應僅如王棕琦以文史印證而說此章實與孔子的〈吾十有五而志於學章〉暗合,同時的,也有其義理的內涵,並且也與孔子的〈不知言無以知人章〉契合,依此而兼攝文理和義理的論述來通貫全章。易言之,孟子的「知言」,其外顯是「不動心」,其作用是「知命、知人」,而孟子最重視的是「知言」的所以然,即:道德判斷力與踐履力的所以然及其所當然,以及二者的統一性,此即全章之核心。
