    Abstract: This study examines the teaching effect of knowledge building for writing among elementary school students in Taiwan. The experimental group involved in Knowledge Building (KB) to enhance writing, and the control group engaged in direct instruction for writing. The findings based on mixed-methods analyses indicate: (1) the KB class outperformed the control class on essay writing as a learning outcome, and (2) there are progressively more engaged collaborative and discussion activities to improve writing ideas during the KB process.
