In this project I will study the international Chinese community established by Malaysian and Taiwanese Buddhists by analyzing Ven. Jicheng’s case. As an international known Chan master and artist, Jicheng was tonsured by Ven. Zhumo in Malaysia, ordained and educated in Taiwan, reminding us about the long-term ignored Chinese Buddhist clergy from Southeastern Asia, who have constituted at least 25% of the students of Taiwanese Buddhist seminars and colleges. He consequently accepted by Ven. Shengyan’s Chan lineage as the first overseas Chinese heir, continuously joined the global expansion of DDM. His case will shield light on the interaction between Taiwanese orders and Chinese immigrant communities. Instead of the globalization::localization theory, my research will explore the international alley among Chinese monastic communities with different colonial background. The project will be divided into four parts: (1) to establish the biographical file of Jicheng; (2) to discuss the interaction between Malaysian and Taiwanese Buddhist circles after World War II; (3) to investigate the network of Taiwanese Buddhist organizations with Southeastern Asian Chinese monks and nuns; (4) to analyze the religious and cultural identity inspiring and reproducing the international Chinese Buddhist community. I will conduct interviews and fieldwork in Malaysia, Taiwan, and USA, following Jicheng’s schedules for mapping this increasing important Chinese religious community.
