Abstract: In the previous research on the civilian exchanges between Taiwan and Korea during the Japanese colonial period, relevant newspapers, magazines, and personal travelogues were collected and organized. An interesting phenomenon emerged during the research process, wherein the majority of publications and visits to Taiwan were concentrated in the late 1920s to the early 1930s. Further comparison with the destinations visited by Koreans revealed significant overlap with the “Eight Scenic Views of Taiwan,” “Twelve Scenic Spots,” and “Two Separate Categories” selected by the Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo in 1927. Whether this itinerary was merely a coincidence or deliberately arranged remains a lingering question. This article, as a preliminary study on civilian exchanges between Taiwan and Korea during the Japanese colonial period, aims to first clarify the historical context in which the “Eight Scenic Views” were formed in Taiwan. Subsequently, the focus will be placed on the “Eight Scenic Views of Taiwan” balloting activity, which garnered the highest number of votes in Taiwan’s history of communication voting. Through this, an understanding of the background, methods, processes, and benefits of the entire activity will be sought. It is anticipated that future analysis of Korean records of visits to Taiwan will delve deeper into their inherent significance and enable comparative research with Korean data.
