Africa is one of the biggest recipients of charity aid. Numerous NGOs are operating all across Africa, and in this research, I used Amitofo Care Center (ACC) as my case study to look closely into the issue of donation strategies and the representation of the black image. ACC is a successful NGO founded by a Taiwanese monk who has opened over seven orphanages in six African countries; it has set itself apart from other NGOs through its Chinese origin, Buddhist beginnings, donation strategies, and most importantly, the way it represents the black image. This research paper attempts to answer questions regarding the difference between ACC’s donation strategy—which is a combination of the ordinary strategies with Chinese culture and Buddhism—and the mainstream strategies used by other NGOs, and how ACC’s strategy has represented the black image as compared to the other NGOs through the eyes of the academia, the beneficiaries, and former ACC expatriate volunteers and local workers.
