Rituals are fundamental to human life. While digital transformation is a contemporary societal phenomenon, temples in Taiwan, as centers of religious worship, still derive their value from rituals. This study examines the impact of digital technology on religious rituals and participants' faith, exploring the current state of temple digitization and its effects on ritual experiences and faith, and proposes recommendations for digital transformation.
This study uses in-depth interviews with key personnel from Songshan Ciyou Temple(松山慈祐宮), Beigang Wude Temple(北港武德宮), and Beigang Chaotian Temple(北港朝天宮), along with 11 worshippers who have used digital religious services. These services include online divination, lighting systems, wealth enhancement, LINE prayer submissions, using machines to dispense divination messages, lighting location systems, EasyCard payments, robotic docents, ATM donations, AI robots, NFT coins, and metaverse virtual worship.
Findings indicate that digital services enhance convenience and accessibility but challenge the essence and sanctity of rituals, potentially diluting traditional practices' emotional connection and community interaction. The main impact is the replacement of sensory experiences. Despite divergent views on sensory experiences, visual, tactile, auditory, and collectiveness (being in the crowd of worshipers) elements remain widely valued. These historical temples are confronted by the tension between digital convenience and traditional asceticism. They generally view digital tools as supplements to, not replacements for, traditional rituals, recognizing digitalization's potential in management, services, and cultural preservation.
This study systematically analyzes the digitization of temples in Taiwan, providing new insights into digital religion, communication studies, and human-computer interaction. It explores the multiple meanings of rituals and their digital transformation, reveals temple officials' perspectives, and considers worshippers' experiences and needs. Focusing on Taiwanese folk beliefs, the study offers a nuanced understanding of digital religion in a regional context. It provides practical advice for religious organizations and technology companies developing digital services. |
