Strategic alliances in the container shipping industry now encompass 80% of global capacity and have emerged as the primary method of cooperation among large container shipping companies. Over years of development and restructuring, their significance within the shipping sector and their value for research have grown markedly. These alliances are aimed at bolstering operational efficiency, cutting costs, broadening market coverage, and enhancing service quality, all to gain an edge in the fiercely competitive market. The management prowess of shipping companies within these alliances is also pivotal for the effectiveness of future cooperative endeavors.
This study aims to delve deeply into the coopetition relationships among partners of a container shipping company following its entry into a strategic alliance through literature review, data collection, and unstructured interviews. Initially, a literature review will be conducted to grasp scholars' insights into the key success factors of individual alliances, the drivers of alliance capability, and the synergy that arises from managing individual alliances to create a portfolio of alliances. Subsequently, unstructured interviews will be utilized to gain an understanding of the operational mode, organizational structure, and synergies produced by the shipping strategic alliances of the case company. Moreover, insights into the causes and impacts of coopetition relationships among strategic alliance partners will be obtained to analyze specific actions that can be taken to mitigate the competition arising within the current stage of the alliance cycle.
Through these efforts, trust and cooperation among partners can be strengthened, resulting in higher alliance success rates and the accumulation of more relevant alliance management experience. Concrete recommendations will be put forward for the guidance of industry practitioners.
