This research project aims to explore the reception and development of Buddhist epistemology in Huizhao (648-714)’s “Essay on Two Measures of Valid Cognition” (Erling zhang), a chapter collected in Dacheng fayuan yilinzhang bucue. Based upon the annotated English translation of Erling zhang, the project will focus on the philosophical issues as follows: 1. How are the epistemological issues, perception and inference in particular, explained with reference to the various states of consciousness, which are characterized in the Buddhist discourse as the defiled state, the non-defiled state, the concentrated state, non-concentrated state, the realm of desire, the realm of form, the realm of formless, the realm of enlightenment, etc.? 2. How are perception and inference explained in terms of its relation to mind (citta) and mental associates (caittas)? 3. How are perception and inference explained in the theory of three-part or four-part structure of cognition (the seeing part, the image part, self-cognition, cognition of self-cognition)? Compared with Dignāga and his Indian followers, who attempted to create an independent space for logic and epistemology, Huizhao in the Xuanzang School rather conceived the project of logico-epistemology as part of meditative theory of consciousness.
