The present research project with the title “The changing nature of life-long familial relationships: My father, my mother and my husband/wife” is one of the sub-project of the integrated research project “Care within the cultural context of Chinese Familism: The searching for the intersubjectivity of care in contemporary Taiwan,” which aims at the emerging phenomena and issues concerning “care” in modern Taiwan society so as to clarify the origin of the problems and contribute to the formation of social policy and solutions to the target issues. Under the scope of “Care within the cultural context of Chinese Familism,” this proposal advances the view that the relationship between adult children and their parents and that between the couples of long-term marriage are the most important phenomena in considering the care issues in contemporary Taiwan society because of their significance in both the practical and urgent tasks of long-term care and the changing nature of Chinese familism. The present project thus takes a three-year plan to investigate the family relationships of father-son, mother-son, father-daughter, mother- daughter, and husband-wife. The purpose of these investigations is to disclose the “family person” as son, daughter, husband and wife in the experience of care-giving and care-receiving. The findings should be able to apply for the modification of Chinese familism.
