This project aims to explore how the Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction (JCRR) introduced and promoted “new crops,” including mushroom and asparagus, from the temperate regions to tropical Taiwan during the 1950s. The JCRR was a Sino-American committee created by an agreement between the governments of the R.O.C and the United States in 1948. The JCRR assisted with rural reconstruction for the purpose of preventing the spread of communism across rural China. The JCRR was relocated to Taiwan in 1949. The outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 resulted in the JCRR halting its plan to withdraw from Taiwan and resuming its agricultural program there. The major agricultural policy in Taiwan shed light on the agenda of “promoting the mutual support of agriculture and industry in their development” (以農業培養工業,以工業發展農業)in the early 1950s. Agricultural exports, including rice, sugar, bananas, and canned pineapples, then became the most important source of foreign exchange. In addition to these traditional crops, the new crops (i.e., mushroom and asparagus) gradually grew as main exports targeting the European and American markets between the 1960s and 1980s. The introduction and production of new crops not only diversified Taiwan’s farming activities, but also increased the income of farmers. This project will shed light on how and why local farmers localized new crops in tropical Taiwan. Furthermore, this project will examine the impacts of new crops farming on local society and on the modernization of agricultural production in the process of Taiwan’s Green Revolution. The project will contribute to elucidating the decisive factor in the transition of Taiwan’s rural society.
