My project is situated at the intersection of sports and urban-political history. I examine the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball team in connection with broader trends within America’s Second City during the tumultuous years 1970-1983. This is the story of a city in decline, as Chicago was no longer perceived as the “city that works.” Chicago was plagued by an increased murder rate, racial unrest, and the decline of the blue-collar economy within the city. Similarly, the Cubs struggled these years, losing games and failing to fully integrate Black players or to attract African- American Chicagoans as fans. Yet, the 1970s and early 1980s also saw the seeds planted for both Chicago’s revival and the Cubs’ recent success. Chicago experienced an explosion of democracy, an awakening of African- American. Hispanic, and LGBT political participation. The challenge to the traditional Democraticmachine politics in Chicago culminated in the election in 1983 of Harold Washington, the city’s only African-American mayor. Chicago also saw the beginnings of a transformation to a tourism and information-based economy, with expanding pockets of urban renewal. The Cubs similarly expanded their appeal, building a nationwide cable television empire. The Cubs – and Wrigley Field, their old-fashioned stadium (opened 1914) – captured the imagination of baseball fans eager to follow baseball’s “loveable losers.”
