Abstract: | 我近年來研究探討的一個重要焦點即在於近代中國的國族意識建構發展過程中,是哪些有關國族的重要論述想像,從晚清以降一再地召喚全民一體榮辱與共的集體認同感,並且持續強化了全體生存危機意識,因而使得國族集體認同情感持續發揮強大的影響力?在後續的研究中,我深受Michael Billing在 Banal Nationalism一書的洞見之啟迪,他指出國族認同(national identity)形塑過程的一個重要關鍵議題,正是做為國族的「我們」(the national “we”)是如何在日常生活的各種情境中被建構而成,而這個被建構的「我們」又被賦與何種意義。這些建構的過程往往因為不斷在日常生活中進行,以致於成為人們習以為常的「自然現象」。 本專書計畫將以「四萬萬」、「祖國」和「同胞」三個關鍵詞為研究主要對象。它們可謂是百年來在經常不斷充斥在日常生活的國族論述中的觀鍵詞。我將仔細考察探討這些符號如何成為近代中國國族論述代表性字眼的歷史發展渊源:一方面以跨語際和跨文化的研究視角,探究它們的現代意涵透過什麼樣的知識文化傳播管道進入近現代中國語境;另一方面則仔細分析它們在進入中國語境後,如何被不同的論述所運用和再界定(例如晚清革命派和維新派都高喊「四萬萬同胞」,但確有大不相同的指涉對象)。我也將探究這樣的擬血緣制國族論述模式在界定他者/我群的過程中,對於那些被界定為「非同胞」的族群而言,產生何種文化效應和相對應的反應?更進一步地,我將解析不同的政治意識型態如何和此種國族論述相結合,彼此相互作用並且如何透過教育、宣傳和大眾傳媒等手段,成為廣大群眾視為理所當然的國族想像模式。同時我也要以比較觀點,從宏觀歷史發展的脈絡(例如以這些符號在近現代日本的發展為對比),來深入反思這些充滿家族血緣意涵的符號持續充斥在各類日常生活中的國族論述的現象,在百年來對於中國國家發展目標想像和國族成員認同的價值取向,產生哪些深遠的政治文化影響? One prominent focus of my research in recent years is to figure out those key features in the modern construction of Chinese national identity which characterize distinctive Chinese collective identity and keep stressing collective sense of national crisis, therefore creating tremendous and lasting emotional power. My current study is deeply inspired by Michael Billing's insight regarding banal nationalism, which points out that one important issue in the construction of national identity is how the national “we” is constructed in daily life, and how this constructed weness is defined in the process. In the book which I propose to write, I will focus on studying three key terms: 400 million, siblings and fatherland. They have undoubtedly been the most popular terms adopted by various discourses of national identity in modern China since the beginning of the 20th century. I will investigate how and why these key symbols became significant elements in the modern construction of Chinese national identity. On the one hand, from trans-lingual and cross-cultural perspective, I will look into the intellectual channels, by which these terms were introduced into China; on the other hand, I will fully examine how these terms were appropriated and redefined/redeployed in various discourses after they entered into the intellectual and cultural universe in modern China. Most importantly, I will discuss the othering impacts of these family-centered discourses of national identity based on imagined bloodline relationship in modern China,especially regarding those who are excluded as non-members by these discourses. In addition, I will also study how this kind of national discourse was appropriated and promoted by different political ideologies, and glorfied into a kind of popular and “natural” mode of national identity, which in turn comes to justify policies of political dominance or even oppression. Furthermore, from a comparative study viewpoint, this study will reflect on the long term positive and negative political and cultural ramifications of the family relationship based discourse of national identity, which have long been available in daily life of modern China, as compared to impact and development of similar type of nationalist discourse in other countries, such as modern Japan. |
