Xu Wei (1521-1593) is often viewed as an ambiguous figure in both pre-modern and modern times. On the one hand, he was highly acclaimed for his various talents in calligraphy, painting, poem, prose and drama composition. On the other hand, he too was notorious partly because of his nine attempts to commit to suicide. None of them succeeded, though. What worse was Xu’s killing of his second wife on the excuse of her infidelity. The sentence of his crime should had been life imprisonment. Yet, Xu was so lucky to be released in six years, owing to the rescue of his official friends and the special amnesty of the newly-enthroned Emperor Wanli. In the milieu of individualism and humanitarianism of the late Ming, Xu Wei was “typical” and “atypical” in the literati circle – some people admired him so much while some others did loathe him. It is in the regard that this project will focus on Xu Wei’s “bizarreness”, “madness” and “sickness/illness” in the terms of his age. In the perspectives of socio-cultural history and history of body and mentality, this project will in particular highlight the multiple facets of Xu Wei, including his secretary career, his appreciation for chivalry life style, his appropriation of military knowledge, etc. No less important was the issue of Xu’s brutal self-mutilation and wife-killing. What these misconducts involved were not only legal penalty and social deviance but probably also the seizure of Xu’s illnesses. They all help to make Xu Wei’s “madness”. By interweaving the threads of Xu Wei’s cultural, physical and psychic worlds this project is aimed to contribute a better understanding of late Ming China.
