Le Morte d’Arthur features gory violence and ominous prophecies within knights’ adventures, and this thesis tries to answer whether violence of characters or fate has any connection with the seemingly unavoidable tragedy in the end of the story. By consulting Erich Auerbach’s argument on figura and Roland Barthes’ discussion on violent spectacle, we recognize how prophetic events and knightly violence work respectively in the prophecies-shrouded Logres, and how characters can attain autonomy within these extant restrictions imposed by divinity or humans. Meanwhile, based on Walter Benjamin’s Critique of Violence and Jacques Derrida’s and Giorgio Agamben’s derivative arguments, the application of their dissection on humans’ pursuit of absolute order to the story enlightens our view on the inevitable course of the decadent legend, pointing out that the irreversible history and inexorable fate are fulfilled only by human agency. Since the temporal cycle of initiation and termination are the inherent part of humans’ struggle towards eternal truth, our urge for perfection both dooms us to corruption before unreachable ideals while prompting further breakthrough in extant boundaries.
