This study argues that Poe’s detective fiction provides a means to understand better both our capabilities and limitations, which involves our delving into the darkest depth within our being. I show how the dialectical employment of curiosity is conducted in terms of Moldenhauer’s concept of the art-death complex. The investigation into the depth of the human mind involves a descent that the observer himself or herself must make. “The Man of the Crowd” can be seen as the prototype for this dialectical process of self-exploration. I examine how the unnamed narrator undergoes a dialectical process in his pursuit of the mysterious old man and reconsiders his conception of humanity. His reconsideration entails both the reverence for the immensity of the human mind and a new understanding of his true self.
In the analysis of the Dupin trilogy, I examine the different ways that the detective attempts to perceive the mystery of another’s consciousness. In “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” Dupin’s identification with the ferocious ourang-outang suggests the paradoxical coexistence of human rationality and animal instincts. In “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt,” Dupin’s discernment of the culprit’s fear reveals both the impossibility to gain full control over the self and the difficulty in resisting the propensity for descent. Finally, in “The Purloined Letter,” Dupin overcomes the shortcomings he sees in his rival. In presenting Dupin’s triumph over his rivals, Poe encourages us to approach this mystery by looking inside ourselves. In this respect, this study asserts that Poe’s detective fiction is a striking attempt to formulate a dialectic of self-knowing in the form of detective narrative. His detective tales entail a cognitive process of self-examination: as we delve deeper, we gain a better understanding of ourselves, knowing both our capabilities and limitations.
