India possesses one of the fastest-growing digital audiences globally. This has translated to tremendous growth in not just the number of content consumers, but content creators as well. However, a systematic study of these ‘micro-celebrities’ and their audiences’ perceptions of them has not been conducted within the cultural context of the country. To this end, this exploratory research analyzed the moral basis of the opinions of Indian anti-fans, specifically situating it within the gendered norms of India’s ‘honor’ culture, by analyzing the popular micro-celebrity gossip subreddit: r/InstaCelebsGossip. Using the framework of the moral foundations theory, a mixed-methods approach of computational structural topic modeling and manual deductive thematic analysis was used to study discussion threads on the subreddit. Findings indicate the prevalence of the moral foundations of care, fairness, and loyalty in the audience’s perception of micro-celebrities, with judgments leaning critical in the case of female social media creators in particular. Further, while certain honor norms were invoked in the formation of anti-fan opinions, other coercive norms were rejected. Finally, the findings demonstrate the prevalence of moral watchdog anti-fandom and its sub-categories of bad object and underdog anti-fandoms. Theoretical contributions to MFT and fandom studies, practical contributions to ethical digital citizenship practices and community moderation systems, and limitations and avenues for future studies in terms of methodology and cultural logics have been discussed.
