With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and cloud computing, their application has become a mainstream trend in market development. The industry of Artificial Intelligence-as-a-Service (AIaaS) has burgeoned, with global technology giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft investing significant resources in this area. The government in our country has also been promoting the development of the domestic AI-related industry through policy initiatives. Service innovation remains a critical competitive advantage for firms; however, in the AIaaS sector, due to the service industry's characteristics, service innovation faces more challenges than product innovation, such as increased ambiguity and risk. Achieving innovation in this industry often involves a plethora of participants, requiring extensive collaboration among various enterprises to address the broad applications and technological needs. Consequently, global tech giants have established their ecosystems to effectively promote service innovation. However, given that AIaaS is an emerging industry, the literature on this topic is relatively scarce. To address this research gap, this study adopts an ecosystem perspective, focusing on AIaaS providers in our country. Utilizing qualitative research methods, this study explores how these providers construct their ecosystems within the AIaaS industry and examines the relationship between ecosystem construction and corporate service innovation. The primary conclusions of this research are as follows:
Conclusion 1: AIaaS providers in Taiwan proactively integrate suppliers, customers, governmental bodies, and academic and research institutions in establishing innovation ecosystems to adapt to the rapid iteration of AI and cloud technologies and sustain competitiveness. They also strengthen market development and innovation performance through various interactive and coopetitive relationships.
Conclusion 2: The establishment of innovation ecosystems by Taiwan's AIaaS providers enhances their dynamic service innovation capabilities and core competencies, particularly those that are "scalable" and "difficult to imitate." It also includes capabilities in "detecting customer needs and technology selection" and "conceptualization."
Conclusion 3: The establishment of innovation ecosystems by AIaaS providers in Taiwan directly influences the creation of more internally oriented new value delivery systems within their service innovation content. It also indirectly fosters more externally oriented innovations such as new service concepts, new customer interactions, and new technology selections through the accumulation of organizational capabilities.
Based on these findings, this thesis also proposes three theoretical implications, three practical recommendations, and suggestions for further research.
