Within the present-day United States, an expansive trans panic has taken hold. As more oppressive anti-trans legislation enters the public sphere, it is important to discuss the ways in which transness is textually represented and effectively Othered. By utilizing Norman Fairclough’s method of Critical Discourse Analysis, which emphasizes the social theory of discourse, this paper focuses on the ways in which texts, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice work in tandem to constitute and reconstitute cisheteronormative social dominance. In sampling the texts of conservative commentator, Michael Knowles, and trans-exclusionary radical feminist, Sharon Byrne, this paper exhibits the power of anti-trans imaginings to exist across ideological spheres as long as current gender norms are institutionally and socioculturally empowered. Overall, this paper finds common textual themes of us vs. them Othering, grotesque presentations of the transness, and the framing of anti-transness as a moral imperative in traditionalist and radical feminist circles. It also sheds light on the need for more research into the intricacies of trans marginalization.
