Understanding how universities can sustainably engage with indigenous communities can lead to the development of effective partnership models that benefit all stakeholders involved, fostering long-term collaboration and mutual respect. Research on durable university engagement and sustainable indigenous development can inform policy-making processes, institutional practices, and community initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable community development.
This study compares two cases of university-community partnership in Taiwan to investigate how durable partnerships can be formed with the aim to facilitate sustainable community development. Key issues examined are long-term financial sustainability of partnerships and maintaining commitment between partners. The cases are underpinned by different models of university-community partnership and compared using most-similar systems design model (MSSD). Qualitative research methods were used, employing direct and indirect observation, participant observation, and unstructured and semi-structured interviews.
The main findings are that sustainable funding for durable partnerships can be generated through social enterprises. In such as model, the role of the university changes from providing resources to providing access to knowledge and capacity-building so that communities can address their own challenges. Long-term community commitment can be stimulated by deep involvement in community development plans and stimulating their entrepreneurial spirits. University commitment can be fostered through establishing permanent place-making bases within communities.
