While steering the political and military system in China, the National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was held every five years and is considered one of the most critical events for the Party and the country. The new leader of the CCP will be elected at the conference, and policy guidelines for governance, economics, and diplomacy will be introduced in the work report right after. On October 16, 2022, the 20th National Party Congress of the CCP was held. Xi Jinping, the general secretary of the Central Committee of the CCP, had been re-elected for his record-breaking third term. The result was not surprising but became the focus of media worldwide soon after. Media and reporters may deliver different narratives according to their political/commercial standpoint, interview methods, and sources. How do different media project these events that occurred during the 20th National Congress of CCP on social media? What kinds of frames and views do different media intend to construct? How do audiences perceive this re-produced information?
This study aims to eliminate the possibility of subjective bias from human intervention and apply data mining tools to collect news texts and audience feedback on the internet and on Facebook. Followed by a Topic Modeling analysis tool to explore frames used in each text and sentiment analysis for how readers perceive this information. By analyzing keywords, topic, frames, and sentiment, we may better understand the political interest and text framing of media and the perception and reaction from the audience as well. In addition, this program would provide a theoretical framework extension by comparing with media from different countries. Future studies would receive a better theoretical foundation on how different media report and project these historical events in China.
