This study investigates the persisting deficiency in comprehensive sexuality education among Indian youth in the 21st century. Notably, the absence of mandatory sexuality education in India allows schools and states the discretion to either omit or selectively implement such programs. This deficiency contributes to the perpetuation of societal taboos surrounding sexuality, rendering adolescents more susceptible to sexual violence and prone to mental health issues. Our research addresses the inadequacies in current sexuality education in India, explores cultural considerations essential for designing effective programs, and proposes the utilization of new media for promoting social awareness on sexuality education.
Methodologically, we conducted an intensive literature review and interviewed 16 participants from India. Additionally, we developed a podcast as an educational medium and gathered feedback from participants to assess its effectiveness. The key findings include: 1) India tailors sexuality education to gender but lacks a parallel focus on cultural and religious nuances; 2) there is a pressing need to educate parents on sexuality education, as they often feel ill-equipped to discuss the topic; 3) educators often advocate for an abstinence approach for matters related to sexuality education 4) single women encounter judgment when seeking gynecological care, leading to avoidance even in cases of STIs or UTIs; and 5) YouTube emerges as the most effective platform for disseminating sexuality education podcasts.
These findings contribute valuable insights for shaping effective sexuality education programs in India, emphasizing the importance of cultural considerations and the involvement of parents. Furthermore, our study supports the efficacy of utilizing YouTube as a prominent medium for promoting social awareness about sexuality education through podcasts.
