In contemporary times, social media has transcended its role as a mere news distribution channel, evolving into a multifaceted tool that empowers audiences to express their viewpoints on news information, engage in public discourse, and foster connections with one another. Audiences’ multiple usage of news content and social media might not fairly reflect those rules and values created by the news production system, but shows audiences’ imagination and expectation regarding social media journalism. This phenomenon inspires researcher to embark on novel avenues of inquiry to comprehend the intricate contexts, diversification, motivation, and patterns of news information consumption and practices in their everyday life.
By employing a methodology of 23 semi-structured interviews to examine the media practices of Taiwanese audiences in their daily interactions with news information, the finding reveals these audiences’ capacity to integrate various social media platforms and devices, and their flexibility to go beyond the spatial and media boundaries as well as the boundaries between publicity and privacy. Audiences’ reading, reception, consumption, misappropriation, and rewriting of news information, also understood as their tactical approaches, demonstrate the mobile rebellion potential to overcome the constraints from media technologies, social platforms, and interpersonal stress. Moreover, some of these audiences transform their trace of everyday practices on news information into some kind of property and capital with which they could continuously improve their news information searching experience, accumulate “news review workpieces” to show their commenting ability, build up connections and so on.
These manifold meanings and contexts surrounding social media usage may further explain the blooming of audiences’ new expression technique that break through the boundaries of writing and speech act. This exploration offers valuable insights into the potential for audiences to actively contribute to the development of an ideal news information environment of social media and media culture while having limited collaboration with journalists and news organizations.
