Abstract: I examine two chapters within the Olympic experience of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) – the first, China’s participation in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics and how the PRC media interpreted the boycott; the second, China’s professed aspirations for boosting its global image by means of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. These two chapters in the PRC’s Olympic experience tell of the changes brought about in the PRC’s expectations for sporting competition and capacity for soft power between 1980 and 2008. While China’s relative power had grown exponentially between 1980 and 2008, there are similarities between how the two episodes might be understood, most notably in the PRC’s constant desire to use international sporting initiatives for to enhance its international image. Still, doubts remain as to the effectiveness of China’s use of olympic sport as a tool of soft power.
