This dissertation explores the phenomenon of radicalization and the importance of effective counter-terrorism strategies in the context of Bangladesh. It examines various factors contributing to radicalization, such as social dynamics, religious interpretation, education, and socio-economic conditions.
The study recognizes that youth are particularly vulnerable to radicalization and that their involvement in terrorism poses significant challenges. It underscores the necessity of protecting youth from the spread of radical ideas by focusing on education, social support, and countering misinterpretations of religious texts. In the case of Bangladesh, where a substantial portion of the population is under 25 years old, special attention should be given to addressing youth radicalization.
Additionally, the dissertation sheds light on the refugee population in Bangladesh, highlighting the demographic composition and limited access to education and opportunities within refugee camps. While the current research indicates a relatively low probability of radicalization among Rohingya refugees, the potential for change in the future necessitates monitoring and providing adequate conditions such as education and employment opportunities to mitigate the risk of radicalization.
The dissertation underscores the broader impact of radicalization on national security, economic development, and political stability. It warns against the negative consequences of terrorist attacks on international trade, foreign investment, tourism, and socio-economic development. Moreover, it recognizes that political instability can arise from the threat of terrorism, enabling certain parties to exploit the situation for political gain, potentially leading to persecution and authoritarianism.
To effectively address radicalization, the dissertation advocates for the implementation of long-term counter-radicalization and deradicalization programs. It stresses the need for consistency and continuity in these programs and emphasizes the importance of tailoring them to national contexts. The involvement of civil society, particularly family and close friends is highlighted as essential for successful deradicalization and reintegration into society. |
